No T’fillah on Thursday Morning
Regularly scheduled for 8:00 a.m. weekly, T’fillah will not be held tomorrow due to preparations for Yom ha-Atzma’ut.
All-School Celebration Includes Israeli-Style Lunch
Israel’s 60th year of independence will be celebrated with the whole school tomorrow during the morning, until lunchtime. Instead of our regularly scheduled hot lunch, in honor of this important occasion, all students will be served an Israeli-style lunch (falafel, hummus, salad, pita, and pickles). Students may still bring lunches from home. Please remind your children to wear white tops and blue bottoms.
STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
Second Grade Learns the Four Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot
What do you get when you see five blenders on a table, each swirling in a wild whir of red, green, blue, purple or orange? Why, recycled paper of course! Ask any second-grader about how to make paper and they can tell you the details of how to make fresh paper out of scraps we don’t need any more. After their in-class workshop with RecycleMore, a division of West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority, they will also go on to tell you that they are saving trees by making their own paper, and therefore saving the environment. With this hands-on appreciation of trees, and active involvement in saving resources, they extended their learning of Tu b’Sh’vat, the celebration of trees. The workshop followed on the heels of parents who came into the classroom to speak on global warming and “green” work places. As for saving resources, one child went home and, at dinner time, it suddenly clicked for her why her parents insisted on using cloth napkins instead of paper towels. How’s that for living the curriculum?
Isaac Sevi Holocaust Writing and Art Contest
At Friday’s Kabbalat Shabbat assembly, Tehiyah students were recognized as winners of the Annual Isaac Sevi Holocaust Writing and Art Contest. Kol ha-Kavod to all of these fifth, sixth and seventh-grade students!
Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Fundraisers
A number of students raised $50 or more in pledges for the American Heart Association for the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart this year. These students were awarded with a special Jump Rope for Heart t-shirt at Friday's assembly. Thanks go out to them for their service in honor of helping to fund research for heart disease. Congratulations to: Eliana Gershon, Gabe Levin, Sasha Milton, Lena Milton, Emma Witkin, Mac Goldman, and Jay Kaplan.
FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS
During the last two days of our Passover/spring break, Elise Prowse, Head of General Studies, had the opportunity to participate in the School Climate and Leadership Symposium presented by the California League of Middle Schools. The conference was held at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, Nevada. The still snow-covered mountains provided a beautiful backdrop to an enriching array of workshops. Elise attended presentations on the relationship between stress and learning, middle school advisory programs, emergency response and crisis management, and school-wide behavioral expectation systems, among others. She was particularly interested in learning about expanding our middle school homeroom time into a more formal advisory program. Additionally, the workshop on emergency response will add immediately to our current emergency protocols. Elise is grateful to have had the opportunity to continually bring new ideas back to school.
KABBALAT SHABBAT KOL HA-KAVOD
Congratulations to the following students who performed at last week’s Kabbalat Shabbat assembly: The second-graders sang in anticipation of Chaggigat ha-Siddur; the fifth-graders sang in anticipation of Chaggigat ha-Tanakh; the fourth and fifth-grade recess dancers grooved to a South African song, led by fourth-grade teacher Ruth; and Eliana Gershon (1-M) and Ziva Rosenfeld (1-M) danced a bright duet.
TODAH RABBAH!
The teachers and staff are deeply grateful for the special treatment they have received this week. The gifts and surprises all week long have been thoughtful, beautiful, tasty, and useful. Todah Rabbah to parents, students, TPO, and especially Carol Goldman and Viviana Lang, TPO co-chairs, for your incredible display of appreciation.

• Community Outreach -- increase our connections to other organizations in the Jewish community, such as the Federation's Young Leadership Division or Business Leadership Circle.
• Fundraising -- serve as a co-chair for Two Nights, One Community or help staff next year's campaign for the Tehiyah Fund.
Please contact Adam Mizock at mizock@comcast.net or Heike Friedman at hfriedman@tehiyah.org, and let them know where you can help.

ART ROOM OPPORTUNITIES
Sewing for the Annual Student Quilt Project
Janet is looking for about 10 parents to help her sew the fringe on this year’s middle school quilt. It will happen in the art room on Thursday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. The body of the quilt will be finished, but we need to tack stuffed gloves all around the quilt as a fringe. You do not need to be an expert sewer, nor a middle school parent, to help. The plan is to finish by 1:15 p.m. that same day. Please e-mail Janet at ivarts@aol.com or call her at 237-8696 and leave a message. Janet truly needs your help. The finished quilt will be on display at the art show during open house and at graduation. Of course, this is a fun way to earn parent hours.
Cutting Fabric
The art room needs some help with prep work. It can be done at home or in the art room. It involves a lot of cutting fabric. The end result can be returned by the end of the year or in the fall. Again, this is a nice way to earn parent hours. Please contact Janet by email ivarts@aol.com and write “cutting” in the subject area.
