No T’fillah on Thursday Morning
Regularly scheduled for 8:00 a.m. weekly, T’fillah will not be held tomorrow due to preparations for Yom ha-Atzma’ut.

All-School Celebration Includes Israeli-Style Lunch
Israel’s 60th year of independence will be celebrated with the whole school tomorrow during the morning, until lunchtime. Instead of our regularly scheduled hot lunch, in honor of this important occasion, all students will be served an Israeli-style lunch (falafel, hummus, salad, pita, and pickles). Students may still bring lunches from home. Please remind your children to wear white tops and blue bottoms.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
Second Grade Learns the Four Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot

What do you get when you see five blenders on a table, each swirling in a wild whir of red, green, blue, purple or orange? Why, recycled paper of course! Ask any second-grader about how to make paper and they can tell you the details of how to make fresh paper out of scraps we don’t need any more. After their in-class workshop with RecycleMore, a division of West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority, they will also go on to tell you that they are saving trees by making their own paper, and therefore saving the environment. With this hands-on appreciation of trees, and active involvement in saving resources, they extended their learning of Tu b’Sh’vat, the celebration of trees. The workshop followed on the heels of parents who came into the classroom to speak on global warming and “green” work places. As for saving resources, one child went home and, at dinner time, it suddenly clicked for her why her parents insisted on using cloth napkins instead of paper towels. How’s that for living the curriculum?

Isaac Sevi Holocaust Writing and Art Contest
At Friday’s Kabbalat Shabbat assembly, Tehiyah students were recognized as winners of the Annual Isaac Sevi Holocaust Writing and Art Contest. This annual event is in memory of Isaac Sevi, who dedicated himself to educating our youth about the Holocaust in the hopes that it would never happen again. Winning entries are displayed in the front lobby of Temple Sinai. The following students are to be congratulated for their entries of poems and/or drawings: Maya Ball-Burack, Simon Budker, Danielle Chidester, Eliana Fujita, Sophia Levin, Anna Rosenfeld, Janelle Stone. Honorable mention was awarded to: Cece Alter, Isabel Alter, Kuba Bar-Din Anglin, Hannah Benau, Michaela ben Izzy, Noah Bennett, Dorianna Blitt, Anita Brown, Danielle Chidester, Erin Earp, Eliana Fujita, Ilana Goldberg, Daniel Golde, Emma Koger, Ariel Kornfeld, Cameron Lease, Aliza Levin, Leah Madden, Lena Milton, Talia Myers, Sofia Peltz, Sam Remler, Gabrielle Rokeach, Noam Samuels, Ezra Schott, Maya Smith, Ravenna Smith, Yarden Sorani, Ben Sukiennik, and Ben Zell. Kol ha-Kavod to all of these fifth, sixth and seventh-grade students!

Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Fundraisers
A number of students raised $50 or more in pledges for the American Heart Association for the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart this year. These students were awarded with a special Jump Rope for Heart t-shirt at Friday's assembly. Thanks go out to them for their service in honor of helping to fund research for heart disease. Congratulations to: Eliana Gershon, Gabe Levin, Sasha Milton, Lena Milton, Emma Witkin, Mac Goldman, and Jay Kaplan.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS
During the last two days of our Passover/spring break, Elise Prowse, Head of General Studies, had the opportunity to participate in the School Climate and Leadership Symposium presented by the California League of Middle Schools. The conference was held at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, Nevada. The still snow-covered mountains provided a beautiful backdrop to an enriching array of workshops. Elise attended presentations on the relationship between stress and learning, middle school advisory programs, emergency response and crisis management, and school-wide behavioral expectation systems, among others. She was particularly interested in learning about expanding our middle school homeroom time into a more formal advisory program. Additionally, the workshop on emergency response will add immediately to our current emergency protocols. Elise is grateful to have had the opportunity to continually bring new ideas back to school.

KABBALAT SHABBAT KOL HA-KAVOD
Congratulations to the following students who performed at last week’s Kabbalat Shabbat assembly: The second-graders sang in anticipation of Chaggigat ha-Siddur; the fifth-graders sang in anticipation of Chaggigat ha-Tanakh; the fourth and fifth-grade recess dancers grooved to a South African song, led by fourth-grade teacher Ruth; and Eliana Gershon (1-M) and Ziva Rosenfeld (1-M) danced a bright duet.

TODAH RABBAH!
The teachers and staff are deeply grateful for the special treatment they have received this week. The gifts and surprises all week long have been thoughtful, beautiful, tasty, and useful. Todah Rabbah to parents, students, TPO, and especially Carol Goldman and Viviana Lang, TPO co-chairs, for your incredible display of appreciation.

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS
Alumni Network, Community Outreach and Fundraising

A key asset of Tehiyah is our community. More than ever, it is critical that we increase our community and alumni outreach efforts. We need the help of several dedicated and energetic volunteers to help us in any of the following areas:
• Alumni Network -- help us compile and update alumni contact information.
• Community Outreach -- increase our connections to other organizations in the Jewish community, such as the Federation's Young Leadership Division or Business Leadership Circle.
• Fundraising -- serve as a co-chair for Two Nights, One Community or help staff next year's campaign for the Tehiyah Fund.

Please contact Adam Mizock at mizock@comcast.net or Heike Friedman at hfriedman@tehiyah.org, and let them know where you can help.

ART ROOM OPPORTUNITIES
Sewing for the Annual Student Quilt Project

Janet is looking for about 10 parents to help her sew the fringe on this year’s middle school quilt. It will happen in the art room on Thursday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. The body of the quilt will be finished, but we need to tack stuffed gloves all around the quilt as a fringe. You do not need to be an expert sewer, nor a middle school parent, to help. The plan is to finish by 1:15 p.m. that same day. Please e-mail Janet at ivarts@aol.com or call her at 237-8696 and leave a message. Janet truly needs your help. The finished quilt will be on display at the art show during open house and at graduation. Of course, this is a fun way to earn parent hours.

Cutting Fabric
The art room needs some help with prep work. It can be done at home or in the art room. It involves a lot of cutting fabric. The end result can be returned by the end of the year or in the fall. Again, this is a nice way to earn parent hours. Please contact Janet by email ivarts@aol.com and write “cutting” in the subject area.

Dear Parents,

Today is Elena Givental’s last day at Tehiyah. After twelve amazing years it is hard to say goodbye to such a valued member of our community. We wish her the absolute best moving forward and thank her for her incredible contributions to this school.

While Elena will be sorely missed, I am pleased to announce the appointment of our new Chief Financial Officer, Amy Coty. Amy will begin in the business office tomorrow, Thursday, May 1. Amy holds a BA degree from Brandeis University and a Masters of Business Administration from North Park University. She has extensive experience in financial management, delivering results against an organization's strategic financial plan and in all aspects of financial oversight. Amy is very excited to be joining us at Tehiyah - please stop by to introduce yourself and help welcome her to our community.

As many of you know, Jonothon Rich ran our TAP program for twelve years. After taking a year off to pursue other opportunities, we are happy to welcome him back to TAP at the beginning of the next school year. Kim Stanley will resume teaching PE full time. We are busy revamping the TAP program and will share details with you as they emerge.

I hope you had a restful Pesach.

MESSAGE FROM THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE
OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees elects trustees each year at its June Annual Meeting. The Nominating Committee of the Board of Trustees assists the Board in this process by nominating a slate of candidates for the Board to consider. If you have any suggestions you believe the Nominating Committee should consider, please contact one of the following members of the Nominating Committee (contact information is in the school directory). You may also leave your suggestions in a sealed confidential envelope, delivered to the school office and marked for the attention of the Committee as a whole or one of its members: Lisa Cohen Bennett, Co-Chair; Holvis Delgadillo, Co-Chair; Leslie Crary; Laurie Earp; or Adam Mizock.

The Nominating Committee welcomes the suggestions of qualified candidates from among our current parent body as well as from the greater community and grandparents, alumni, and alumni parents. You will soon be receiving a more detailed letter regarding qualities the Committee looks for in selecting potential nominees. These qualities include an interest in the long-term strategic success of the school, ensuring it has a solid financial basis supported by robust fundraising, and supporting the Head of School. The Head of School, not the Board, is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the school and its programs, including the development and implementation of the curriculum and staffing.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK – NEXT WEEK!
Next week, May 5-9, is National Teacher Appreciation Week. Please look for email messages from your room parents to find out how you can help show your appreciation to our Tehiyah teachers and other staff members. Dear Parents,

I was fortunate to attend the PEJE conference in Boston last week. I was joined by over 1,300 delegates from 265 schools from North America. There were also educators and lay professionals from Australia, Mexico, South Africa, and Israel in attendance. Every day there was a menu of sessions to choose from on a variety of topics relating to excellence in Jewish education. I tried to focus on the sessions dealing with affordability and teaching strategies to meet the needs of different learners. Under the topic of differentiated instruction, there was consensus that one size can’t fit all types of learners. All students can learn, and we need to have a flexible approach to teaching so that the learning will be accessible, relevant and meaningful to all the students. As educators we have to articulate appropriate expectations for each individual learner, regardless of the student’s capabilities. We have children across the spectrum - from children with learning challenges to those who are profoundly gifted. Our challenge is to reach all learners. It is always reinforcing to hear that our focus on differentiation this year was in keeping with best practices. I will share some other session highlights in future articles.

One keynote speaker was Pat Bassett, Head of NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools), who spoke on the “The Right Brained Future: Creating 21st Century Schools and Strategic Indicators.” He outlined strategies to prepare students for “jobs that don’t yet exist” and for solving tomorrow’s problems. The other keynote speaker was Natan Sharansky, former Soviet dissident, human rights activist, and Israeli politician. He shared his belief that only when individuals are firmly grounded in their own identity can they reach out to contribute to the growth and betterment of society.

I will be returning to South Africa for my mother-in-law’s tombstone unveiling. After the break, I will return to school on May 1. Have a restful Pesach break and enjoy listening to your children as they share with you their knowledge and meaning of both the story and songs of Passover.

Chag Sameach,
Bathea James

KABBALAT SHABBAT KOL HA-KAVOD
In lieu of a talent show this year, students may audition to perform at a Kabbalat Shabbat Friday assembly. Congratulations are extended to the following students who performed last week: Lilly Baker (1-0), Nathan Baker (1-M), and Noah Baker (6-S) each played guitar individually; Pele-Or Greenberg (4-R) and Matthew Stoloff (4-A/J) performed a drumming duet. Kol ha-Kavod!

The date for the first day of school has been moved one day earlier, to Monday, August 25, 2008. FREEDOM FROM TEHIYAH
Pesach break begins this Friday, April 18 (there is no school on that day). School resumes on Tuesday, April 29, 2008.

This week, students were greeted by Moses, on stage, at Modeh Ani. He was interviewed and provided insight into the Israelite experience at the time of Pharaoh. Students continue to celebrate Passover in their classrooms. Activities in the lower grades include colorful seder celebrations, traditions, singing. In the fifth and older grades, celebrations will take on alternative twists, including the discussion of 10 modern day plagues, writing their own four questions, a re-enactment of the telling of the Passover story (magid), contemporary melodies, trivia questions, and more. Ask your child to share the experience. Chag Kasher v’Sameach!

DAY OF SILENCE
On Tuesday, many students chose to participate in the Day of Silence, a project of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network. This project is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment – in effect, the silencing – experienced by LGBT students and their allies. This year’s Day of Silence was held in memory of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student who was killed this year by a classmate because of his orientation. The goal of the Day of Silence is to inspire change so that such a tragedy will never happen again. The Day of Silence at Tehiyah was organized by Simone Hudson (8).

CONVERSATION WITH THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Thursday, April 17 after Modeh Ani
Adam Mizock, the President of Tehiyah's Board of Trustees, invites community members to engage in informal conversation next Thursday, April 17 in the courtyard after Modeh Ani. Please stop by and say hello. You are especially encouraged to drop by if you are interested in increasing your involvement in Tehiyah's development and outreach efforts.

YEARBOOK ORDERS
Due Thursday, April 17
This is the last week to order your 2007-2008 Tehiyah Day School Yearbook at the lower rate! These hardbound, student-created yearbooks, professionally published by LifeTouch, will arrive at the school approximately 10 days before graduation. Order forms are available in the front office and can be downloaded from our web site's front page, www.tehiyah.org. Pre-ordered Yearbooks are $25 if ordered by April 17; purchases after April 17 will cost $30. This year's amazing cover artwork was created by eighth-graders Lili Lash-Rosenberg and Liana Barach. Our unique theme was created by the yearbook class.

Tehiyah seventh-grade students will sing at this event, and drawings and poems will be submitted by our middle school students. The commemoration will take place on Tuesday, April 29, 8:00 p.m. at Temple Sinai, located at 28th and Webster Streets in Oakland.

Camp is open to all girls and boys, and their family and friends, in grades 3-8. Spaces fill quickly, so register early. The Timberwolves Basketball Camp is a great way to learn basketball at your experience level, so you build confidence to pursue other basketball playing opportunities here at Tehiyah and beyond. Invite your family and friends to join you in a fun-filled week of basketball camp. Registration forms are available in the office. See Coach Gory or call (510)233-3013 ext. 139 if you have further questions. Go Timberwolves!

KABBALAT SHABBAT KOL HA-KAVOD
In lieu of a talent show this year, students may audition to perform at a Kabbalat Shabbat Friday assembly. (Parents are notified when their own children will be performing.) Last week was the first week of performances. Congratulations are extended to the following students for being the inaugural performers: Rafi Wirtschafter (1-0) sang an original song; Tal Kornfeld (4-A/J) played piano; Ethan Ostrow (4-R) sang to his own piano accompaniment; Celia Alter (5-D) played violin while hula-hooping; and the eighth-grade band (Seth Gorrin, Leo Grossman, Max Hirtz-Wolf, Alex Lang, Victoria Miller, and Sam North) played a rock song, as well as for Kabbalat Shabbat. Kol ha-Kavod!

PASSOVER BREAK
This year, the Pesach break begins on Friday, April 18 (there is no school on that day). School resumes on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Chag Sameach!

PASSOVER AT TEHIYAH
Next week, students will be celebrating Passover in their classrooms. Celebrations throughout the school will take place over the course of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Activities in the lower grades will include seder celebrations, traditions, singing, and the like. In the fifth and older grades, celebrations will take on alternative twists, including the discussion of 10 modern day plagues, writing their own four questions, a re-enactment of the telling of the Passover story (magid), contemporary melodies, trivia questions, and more. Chag Kasher v’Sameach!

Tehiyah would like to move its off-site storage items to a new and improved storage facility. If you are aware of anyone who can provide the school with a storage option, please contact RoseMarie at rosemarie@tehiyah.org.

PRECARIOUS PARKING
For the safety of our students - your children - please remember that the only place to drop off children in the morning is in the drop-off lane, through the school parking lot. STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
Second-Grade Chinese Cultural Studies

What do you get when you cross a hamentasch and fortune cookie? A happy Tehiyah second-grader! To understand different cultures, one must study their history and traditions. And that is exactly what second-graders did this year – they immersed themselves in Chinese culture. They began their unit discussing the Chinese New Year and reading stories about how twelve animals became part of the Chinese Zodiac. There was much excitement on the day both classes walked through the streets of Oakland Chinatown. Did you know that there is an herb store that still uses an abacus; that the fortune cookie actually originated in the U.S. and is produced in an Oakland factory; and that the Asian Branch of the Public Library has books in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese?

The Chinese culture is rich in art, food and history. Each second-grader tried his/her hand at both Chinese brushpainting and making Chinese tangrams. They practiced using chopsticks and were very surprised to find that lotus root salad and Chinese tea taste pretty good! They studied the Great Wall of China and read a folktale about how the Seven Chinese Brothers were able to fix a hole in that incredible wall!

To finish up their unit, second-graders had a classroom visit from one of the teachers of the Peking Acrobats. Wayne explained that the art of acrobatics has existed in China for nearly 2500 years. He explained that concentration is the main skill behind all of the juggling and balancing that the acrobats do. On Monday, at Cal Performances, Tehiyah’s second-graders were all thrilled to watch the stunning and amazing Peking Acrobats perform on stage. Some of the costumes were so large and humorous, it was like an extension of antics one might expect for Purim. What a colorful, connected world we live in.

To view the second-grade classes on their Chinatown experience, visit: http://picasaweb.google.com/LindaDelucaWong/Chinatown

MAZAL TOV

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
Do you remember what it was like to be new at Tehiyah? Most incoming families are feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness right now and there is a lot that we can do as a community to help make their transition to our school a positive one. One of the nicest things that we can do to help new families feel welcome is to reach out over the summer and invite them over for dinner, playdates and/or just be there for them if they have questions about how things work here at Tehiyah.

The job of a host family is to call one or two new families between now and June to introduce yourself and then, over the summer, to invite the family over to your home for a playdate and/or Shabbat dinner. If you think you might like to be a host family, please contact Amy Utstein for more information at (510) 233-3013 ext. 239, autstein@tehiyah.org, or just stop by the admissions office.

PURIM AT TEHIYAH
Have you seen the transformation at Tehiyah Day School? Purim revelry has been in the air for a couple weeks already thanks to Peter Weschler (Benjamin K – J&B) who helped organize the decoration (and transformation) of school. Thanks to all the parents and teachers who dedicated time and energy to ready the school for Friday!

This Friday, March 21 will be Tehiyah’s Purim Celebration. Come in costume! The Megillah reading will be held 10:15 – 11:30 a.m. in the gym. The carnival will take place 12:30 – 2:45 p.m., and then all will help clean up 2:45 – 3:15 p.m. Students will not be dismissed until 3:15 p.m. If you will be picking up a child who normally rides the school bus, please inform the bus hotline, or the front office, on that day.

Costumes! Unless you have heard otherwise from your classroom teacher, please send your child to school in costume. Adult visitors are encouraged to dress up, too! We ask that all abide by the school dress code. No pretend weapons, please.

Stop by the TPO booth where you can buy hamentaschen and a cup of coffee while enjoying the Purim carnival. TPO officers will even sing to you if you buy a dozen! Bring your checkbook to purchase Peet's cards at the TPO table.

We expect to have lots of visitors on Friday and implore all parents to PLEASE follow our parking rules. Tehiyah has received an increased number of complaints from its neighbors recently and, as our school depends upon these relationships, we ask for your support. To remind you, there is no parking – whatsoever – permitted on Tassajara and Carquinez north of Barrett, on the block of the school. Thank you for being considerate!

TODAH RABBAH FROM TPO
From the bottom of our garbage, I mean GARAGE sale hearts: A big thank you goes out to Emmy Scharlatt (Eli Davey 7-P) for organizing the Tehiyah Garage Sale! The sale made over $650 for the Middle School Science Classroom. TPO thanks all volunteers, parents and students who participated by donating, buying, baking, transporting items, and working at the sale.

Also, we extend a warm thank you to Daphne Albert (Arielle 5-D and “Bo” 3-B) for organizing the TPO Barnes and Noble fun-raiser which was held this past Sunday in El Cerrito plaza. Two excellent speakers, Dave Weinstein and Elisa Kleven, engaged their audiences with stimulating presentations. Proceeds will go towards the purchase of equipment needed in different classrooms.

TPO BARNES & NOBLE FUN-RAISER
This Sunday, March 16, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Now that you’ve cleaned out your closets and the Tehiyah garage sale is over, consider spending your Sunday afternoon at a delightful presentation. Dave Weinstein will present at 1:00 p.m. and Elisa Kleven will speak at 3:00 p.m. at Barnes & Noble in the El Cerrito Plaza, this Sunday.

Consider making a list of books ahead of time that you might like to purchase on that day. TPO gets a percentage of the total purchase your family makes during those hours. Vouchers are no longer needed; just go and shop! We made over $800 in the last fundraiser. If you have questions, email Viviana Lang at vivlang2002@yahoo.com.

Elisa Kleven always created little imaginary worlds. When she was a child, she loved making miniature people and animals out of paper, paint, clay, scraps of cloth, yarn, nutshells, and even dried apples. She'd lose herself for hours making up stories about these characters, and creating tiny homes and landscapes for them to live in. Now that she’s an adult, not much has changed. She now creates these worlds for children through her books. She continues mastering characters and little worlds out of paper, paint, and scraps of this and that. She has written and/or illustrated over 25 children's picture books, including: The Paper Princess, The Puddle Pail, Ernst, The Apple Doll, The Wishing Ball, Abuela (by Arthur Dorros), The Lion and the Little Red Bird, and Sun Bread. She lives in the East Bay with her husband, daughter, son, and a few dogs and cats. Visit her website for more details on her work: www.elisakleven.com. The talk will begin at 3:00 p.m.

Dave Weinstein’s talk is entitled: “Building in the Hills: The Hillside Architecture of Berkeley, Kensington and El Cerrito.” He is the author of “Signature Architects of the San Francisco Bay Area,” and of the text for “Berkeley Rocks: Building with Nature.” He will discuss the wonderful homes, churches and other buildings that make the East Bay Hills one of the most distinctive architectural areas in the United States. Dave will talk about Berkeley’s Hillside Club, which promoted building with nature, and will discuss the rocks that fill so many hillside backyards. He will also focus on the lesser-known architecture of Kensington and El Cerrito. The talk will begin at 1:00 p.m.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Kindergarten
Ricki and Jean’s class read a story about a humble man who thought his prayers weren't good enough for G-d to hear. A Rabbi (in the story) overheard this and said the man's prayers were the best kind because they were sincere and from the heart. The children then expressed their own prayers:
Jacob Coggshall: Thank You, G-d, for all the wonderful food in the world and for the planet we live on. And thank You, G-d, for the school we go to and for all of our parents.
Sasha Goldman: Thank You for everything we have.
Liam Kharb: Thank You for giving us all the things we want.
Joshua Engel: I'm thankful I have a father and a mother and a sister.
Sophia Clearfield-Whyte: Thank You, G-d, for everybody in my family. I love my whole family.
Moriya Zamir: Thank You for everything you give us.
Sophia Kingsbury: Thank You for the trees, for instruments, for all the holidays and for the Shabbat candles.
Liam Clearfield-Whyte: Thank You for all food and water and trees and flowers You gave us.
Hannah Dutta: Thank You, G-d, for all the trees to make us healthy and make the world clean.
William Pennington-Kent: Thank You, G-d, for my parents.
Ari Epshtein: Thank You, G-d, for all the trees that give us oxygen and for the food that makes us healthy.
Sophie Kiang: Thank You for my Mom and Dad.
Cela Parker: I'm glad that G-d gave us oxygen and health doctors and parents.
Sophie Hanin: Thank You, G-d, for such wonderful parents that I have and thank you for making me be alive.
Milo Jacquet: Thank You for my doggie.

First Grade
Recently both first-grade classes experienced a workshop with an actor from Berkeley Repertory Theater. Tessa performed the Jewish folk tale It Could Always Be Worse. She then led the children in a series of sound and freeze exercises depicting characters and scenes in the story. Once the scene was frozen, she gave direction and suggestions to each group. She talked about how actors use their bodies to show each character in the book, as well as express sounds that might be associated with them. Each child had a chance to try out this new format of storytelling. Together they created silent scenes for each part of the book. Then, the scenes were run in order, to recreate the story. This workshop was engaging, informative and fun for all involved!

CONDOLENCES
The Tehiyah community would like to express our sincere condolences to Barry Rokeach on the recent passing of his father, grandfather of Rose (6-S) and Gabrielle (6-N).

6th ANNUAL JUMP ROPE / HOOPS FOR HEART
HEART-FELT THANKS

Kim Stanley, jump rope event coordinator, extends a huge thank you to all students, teachers and families who participated in the 6th annual Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart event. Students showed off their new skills and tricks at the assembly on February 22, with fantastic performances. Every grade level performed jump rope skills and routines learned in P.E. classes. Last Friday, after having lunch together, the students jumped with their buddies "to their heart's content" in stations practicing various rope skills such as jumping songs, long ropes, double dutch, individual rope skills and tricks. Hoops and dribbling stations were in the gym, and a special obstacle course station with hula hoops, limbo, parachute, climbing and other fun activities was outside (a perfect sunny day). Thank you to the sixth-grade helpers for their leadership during the event. A great day was had by all!

Jump ropes will continue to be on sale for $3 in the P.E. equipment room until they are gone. Pledge forms for the AHA can still be turned in this week to the homeroom teacher or Kim's box.

Heart-felt gratitude is extended to the parent volunteers who contributed in various ways to make this event possible: Assembly Help: Judy Kowarsky; Certificates: Gene Baker; Set-up the night before: Maria Beddia, Rebecca and Sophie Vogel; Video Taping: Ben Leipman, Michael Young, David Vogel; Photography: Nadine Samuels; Set-up the day of / Station Monitoring: Arlene Immerman, Rebecca Vogel, Karin Morris; Music help: John Schott, Katja Cooper. Every volunteer is incredibly appreciated for personal donation of time, efforts and contributions!

TPO BARNES & NOBLE FUN-RAISER
Sunday March 16, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Come to Barnes and Noble of El Cerrito Plaza to hear Dave Weinstein’s talk: “Building in the Hills: The Hillside Architecture of Berkeley, Kensington and El Cerrito.”

Dave Weinstein is the author of “Signature Architects of the San Francisco Bay Area,” and of the text for “Berkeley Rocks: Building with Nature.” He will discuss the wonderful homes, churches and other buildings that make the East Bay Hills one of the most distinctive architectural areas in the United States.

He’ll talk about Berkeley’s Hillside Club, which promoted building with nature, and will discuss the rocks that fill so many hillside backyards. Dave will also focus on the lesser-known architecture of Kensington and El Cerrito. The talk will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be illustrated.

Consider making a list of books ahead of time that you might like to purchase on that day. TPO gets a percentage of the total purchase your family makes during those hours. Vouchers are no longer needed; just go and shop! We made over $800 in the last fundraiser. More information will follow. If you have questions, email vivlang2002@yahoo.com.

A REMINDER ABOUT CELEBRATIONS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
Just a reminder about celebrations outside of school, as noted in the Student/Parent Handbook: Out of respect for religious observance, it is requested that birthday celebrations not be held on Shabbat or on Jewish holidays. If your guest list is comprised of fellow classmates, the school encourages inclusion of the whole class.

Additionally, on days when there is no school due to a Jewish holiday, school-related work and events should not be scheduled. Families are encouraged not to schedule any non-holiday related social events involving the Tehiyah community on these dates or on Shabbat.

At events celebrated with Tehiyah families, it is also considerate to respect dietary laws.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
Kindergarten

For the 100th day of school, Ricki and Jean asked their kindergarten students what they will be like when they are 100 years old. Below are some of their replies. (For the full effect with pictures, visit their classroom.)
Ari Epshtein: When I am 100 years old, I will be stiff and I will look different. I will have a wrinkled face and I will have a pet fish to feed.
Cela Parker: If I was 100, the world would be different. I would meet new people. I would live in a new house and people would visit me.
Hannah Dutta: When I am 100 years old, I will have four dogs and all the colors will be very pretty. The leaves will tumble to the ground.
Sophie Kiang: When I am 100 years old, I am going to die. I will look old. And I will look like an old woman. I would dye my hair.
Jacob Coggshall: If I was 100, I would be the president wishing for all the candy in the world except gum because I do not eat gum.
Joshua Engel: When I am 100 years old, I will be old and I will walk with a walker. And I will feel a little mad.
Liam Clearfield-Whyte: When I am 100 years old, I won't be alive any more. All that will be left of me will be my skeleton. When my ghost goes up to heaven, he will bring my soul to the heaven.
Milo Jacquet: I would barely fit through the door when I am 100 hears old and I will be skinny and tall.
Moriya Zamir: When I am 100, I am going to live in a different house. And I am going to have a pet. I would look different. My hair would look a little browner. I will have more stuff.
Sasha Goldman: When I am 100, I will live in the kind of place that old people live in when they are too old to take care of themselves. I will look old and I will hope that people will visit me.
Sophia Clearfield-Whyte: When I am 100 years old, I will feel like I am going to die. If I die, my spirit will guide me. I will have white hair and be very old and I am going to feel like that.
Sophia Kingsbury: I will look different when I am 100 years old. I will have a pet, a dog, like a seeing-eye dog. I will have more stuff. I will have a garden. I will have flowers in my garden. There will be birds in my garden.
Sophie Hanin: If I were 100, I would not live in the same house any more and I wouldn't be able to visit anybody without help. People would have to visit me more often than I would visit them.
William Pennington-Kent: When I am 100 years old, soon I am going to die. I am going to have grandchildren. I would look like an old man. Liam Kharb: When I am 100 years old, I will paint myself by paintbrush. I don't know how I will look like, but I will be really sad because Abraham Lincoln died.

First Grade

Onna’s first-grade class was inspired by the occasion of the 100th day of school as well. Below are a few examples of some poems they w
